Creating a BOM
Note: You can create a BOM for a stock item that does not already have a BOM created for it.
There are several ways of creating a BOM A stock assembly and process costing system, which provides facilities to specify the structure of finished items in terms of sub-assemblies and components..
- New: You can set up a new BOM (see below).
- Duplicate: You can copy a BOM when you are creating a new BOM record, using the Duplicate button.
- Copy: You can copy a BOM from the menu or from the toolbar.
- Import: You can import a bill of materials record.
If you are using Manufacturing, you can:
- Convert an estimate into a BOM.
- Convert a one-off works order into a BOM.
Note: Important! Using this option creates an operation resource in the BOM record. If you rename this resource in the BOM record, and it is changed subsequently in the operation record, you will not be able to update manually amended rates using Update Operation Rates.
To create a BOM
Open: Bill of Materials > Records > New Bill of Materials.
-
Select a stock code for the BOM A stock assembly and process costing system, which provides facilities to specify the structure of finished items in terms of sub-assemblies and components. from the Stock Item drop-down list. This code already exists in the Stock Control module. When you select the code, the description appears automatically in the Details section.
Note: If you have selected the Allow creation of BOM for Components check box in the Bill of Material Settings General tab, the Stock Item drop-down list will show all stock items, including components Raw materials used to manufacture finished goods..
- Enter the BOM details.
- Enter the stock codes for the component parts or raw materials The base materials from which sub-assemblies, components and finished goods are made..
-
Enter details of the manufacturing operations needed. These may include machine processes, labour processes or both.
Note:Some of the information that you can enter for an operation and use in the Bill of Materials module cannot be used in other Manufacturing modules.
If you want to use a BOM record in an estimate, be aware that:
- Estimating only supports one labour resource OR one machine resource per operation.
- Teardown resources are not used currently in the Estimating module.
- Only Machine setup costs are included in the Estimating module. Labour setup costs are not.
If you have an operation that uses two labour rates, for example, and you want to use the BOM in the Estimating module, create two operations for the BOM.
- Enter any notes relating to the BOM.
- Enter the attached files to open with a BOM.
- Enter drawing references for the BOM.
- View costing details relating to the BOM.
- Add analysis codes for the BOM.
-
View the BOM history.
Note: The History tab is visible if you select Keep BOM change history in the Bill of Material Settings General tab.
- Save images with the BOM.
-
Save the BOM.
Note: If you are using all Manufacturing modules, you have selected Perform Compatibility Checks in Manufacturing System Manager system settings Environment tab and you have compatibility issues, the Compatibility Warnings prompt appears.
